Chocolate Mousse for your Bones

The breakfast that tastes like dessert and works like a bone health strategy.

If you’ve been told to “look after your bones” but never told what to eat, start here.

Why your bones need attention now

Bone loss accelerates as oestrogen declines. Women can lose up to 10% of their bone mass in the first five years after menopause. Most women don’t know it’s happening until a scan, or a fracture, tells them.

The good news: what you eat in your 40s and 50s directly shapes the bone you keep. This recipe packs the key nutrients into one jar you’ll look forward to eating.

Who this is for

Women in perimenopause or postmenopause who want to protect their bones, preserve muscle and eat in a way that feels like a treat, not a punishment.

What’s in every jar

39g protein. Protein makes up roughly half of bone volume, and adequate intake (alongside calcium) is linked with better bone density. It also clears the 30g threshold for muscle protein synthesis, protecting the muscle that loads and protects your skeleton.

~435mg calcium. That’s a third of the 1,300mg daily target for women over 50, before you’ve left the house.

~150mg magnesium. That’s almost half your daily needs. Around 60% of your body’s magnesium is stored in bone, and you need it to activate vitamin D.

50g prunes, the dose used in the research. In a 12-month study of postmenopausal women, 50g of prunes a day preserved hip bone density, while the control group lost it. Each jar contains exactly that amount.

20g fibre. That’s two-thirds of your daily target, to keep you full for hours and support gut health.

No refined sweeteners. The sweetness comes from prunes and berries.
